Abstract

Officials at the new Cumberland County Jail on Monday were informed by an inmate that four other inmates had removed two rivets that secured the bottom of a section of the chain-link fence surrounding the facility's recreation yard. The four inmates, including convicted arsonist Virgil Smith, were transferred to the maximum security section of the old jail on Federal Street, and jail officials said the fences will be reinforced to prevent further tampering.
