Abstract

The University of Southern Maine won 97 grants totaling more than $10 million during 1993-94, and expectations are that figure will be surpassed this year. Outside funding at the school more than doubled between 1987 and 1991, partly because the university in the mid-1980s made a point of hiring faculty involved in research. Ken Weber, a biology professor specializing in evolutionary genetics, won a $340,840 grant from the National Science Foundation to fund his work with fruit flies.
