Abstract

The Maine Taxpayers Action Network, a coalition of local taxpayer organizations, last week announced a petition drive to place a referendum on the 1995 ballot to allow voters to decide on a statewide property tax cap. Municipal officials are worried about the effect such a cap would have on local services, and both sides are pointing to the caps instituted in California and Massachusetts to make their cases in support of and opposition to the cap.
