Abstract

The Maine Historical Society, the fourth-oldest historical society in the country, has embarked on a $3.1 million fund-raising campaign to upgrade its facility and make its collections more accessible to the public. Since its founding in 1822 the institution has been primarily a research facility, and its library is the state's largest historical and genealogical reference collection. The acquisition two years ago of the three-story building next to its Congress Street headquarters has allowed the society to open a museum, and a new exhibit is already planned. Details.
