Abstract

Maine Supreme Judicial Court Chief Justice Daniel Wathen yesterday said the $30 billion federal crime bill is another example of how federal lawmakers ignore the needs of underfunded court systems such as Maine's. Wathen said that the bill contains relatively little new funding for court systems while beefing up police forces, resulting in more strain on the judiciary. Maine has fewer judges per capita than any other state, and its court budget is well below the national average.
