Abstract
Juniors at Freeport High School are required to take American Studies, a yearlong course covering history and literature that tests students' reading, writing and research skills. Nearly 30 percent of the 66 juniors that took the course last year didn't pass. Despite criticism from students and parents that the course is too difficult school officials refuse to relax the standards. Peggy Muir, a history teacher, developed the course with English teacher Sally MacKenzie. Details.
