Abstract
Philip A. Destefano, Jr., 39, of Lewiston, escaped from the new $27 million Cumberland County Jail on Thursday and is still at large. Considered armed and dangerous, he is the first prisoner to escape from the facility, and his ability to do so has raised a number of questions about the security of the jail in the minds of state and county officials. Destefano was awaiting trial on cocaine trafficking charges and faced a 30 years prison sentence. Given the charges, he should have been classified a maximum security prisoner and housed in the old county jail. The new jail has been approved for minimum and medium security prisoners only.
