Abstract

On Thursday, the National Science Foundation announced that President Clinton will award a National Medal of Science to George S. Hammon of Bowling Green State University. Hammon, 73, grew up on an Auburn farm and graduated from Bates College. He fathered the field of organic photochemistry, which involves the interaction of light with matter, with applications in the making of vinyl plastics, computer chips and in other industries.
