Abstract

The state Bureau of Medical Services is responsible for recovering money spent by the state under Medicare on medical services which should have been paid for by a patient's private insurance company. In 1993, the bureau recovered $10.3 million, making it tops in the nation. As a percentage of dollars recovered compared to expenditures, Maine's recovery rate was four times higher than the national average and well above that of the other New England states.
