Abstract

Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife officials yesterday said that the harsh weather of last winter and other factors affecting the state's deer population have resulted in a reduction of deer-hunting permits for this fall. Around 32,800 any-deer permits will be issued this year, a reduction of 12,000 over last year. Mild winters will result in winter deaths of as little as three percent of the deer population, while herd losses can exceed 35 percent following extremely harsh winters. Officials are predicting hunters will kill around 24,600 deers in Maine during the 1994 season, as compared to the 27,042 reported killed last year.
