Abstract

The state recently purchased 545 Stinger road spike units for use by state and local police as an alternative to high-speed chases. The new spike mats were tested yesterday when a car driven by a Florida teenager being pursued by New Hampshire State Police entered the Maine Turnpike at the York toll plaza. One of the mats was laid across the roadway at Mile 18 of the Turnpike, and when the driver of the vehicle passed over it eight or nine spikes were picked up and the vehicle's tires were punctured.
