Abstract

The Portland Fish Exchange is the heart of the area's fishing industry, and helped make Portland in 1993 the top fishing port in New England based on weight of fish. Commercial fishing generates an estimated $100 million annually for the city's economy, and more than 100 fishing boats make Portland their home boat. The fish auction commonly sold 200,000 pounds of fish daily, but the current daily volume rarely tops 100,000 pounds. Some observers say this summer has been the slowest in years.
