Abstract

University of Maine researcher Barry H. Rodrigue is uncovering the Old Canada Road, the 177-year-old route of the first significant French-Canadian immigration to Maine. The road dates back to 1817, when the Massachusetts Legislature ordered a road be built to Quebec, then a major market for livestock, crops and fish. The Old Canada Road follows its modern successor, U.S. Route 201, and Rodrigue is using archaeology, geography, satellite technology and computer analysis in his study of it. Details.
