Abstract

In-line skates, also known as rollerblades, are fast becoming as commonplace in Portland as bicycles or ice skates. Local stores report their sales of in-line skates have doubled this year over last. The federal Consumer Product Safety Commission calls the activity intrinsically dangerous, and projects that emergency room visits nationwide involving in-line skaters will increase from 37,000 in 1993 to 83,000 in 1994.
