Abstract

Fifth in a six-part series on the fishing industry entitled "Empty Nets, Sinking Hopes." Cod harvests in Newfoundland dropped 91 percent in five years, from 245,000 metric tons in 1988 to 21,000 metric tons in 1993. All cod fishing was banned this year, and the problems in Newfoundland hold troubling implications for the New England fishery. Details, related article.
