Abstract

Last in a six-part series on the fishing industry, entitled "Empty Nets, Sinking Hopes." There are too many large, highly efficient fishing vessels in New England's waters, and technological advances continue to increase the abilities of fishermen to track and catch fish. Some observers say if the fish are to be saved drastic changes must be made, and a buyout of larger boats is one proposal that has been forwarded. Banning or regulating certain types of gear or fishing techniques to limit the catch would also help the stock. Details, related articles.
