Abstract

The Maine Legislature five months ago overwhelmingly denied a request by the Passamaquoddy Indian tribe to build a gambling casino in Calais. State officials expect the Passamaquoddies to file a lawsuit over the denial, and in the meantime are watching developments throughout the New England region. Connecticut has an astoundingly successful Indian-run casino in Ledyard, and the Mohegan Tribe plans to build another one in that state. The Wampanoag Tribe of Gay Head Indians is expected to build a casino in New Bedford, Massachusetts, and the Narragansetts have received the governor's approval to build a casino in Rhode Island.
