Abstract

Bluefin tuna are among the most elusive fish in the Atlantic Ocean. They can sprint up to 50 mph and weigh in at half a ton. The best tunas, which are prized by the Japanese for their high-fat meat, can bring up to $20,000 and more for a single fish. Hundreds of people have been drawn out to sea in the hopes of hooking one. Andrea Brand of Phippsburg has petitioned the federal government to restrict who can catch and sell bluefin tuna, saying she is trying to preserve the traditional fishing life along the Maine coast.
