Abstract
Philip J. Roy, 78, of Sanford, was a rifleman with the 29th Infantry Division after it landed on Omaha Beach on D-Day during World War II. Roy, a native of Quebec, was one of the few soldiers in his unit who spoke French. He met and befriended a French youngster named Claude Ganaye in September 1944, and this weekend was preparing to depart for France to see if he could locate Ganaye. Ganaye, now 67 and living in California, called Roy at his home after he was told about an Associated Press story recounting Roy's hopes of finding his old friend. Details.
