Abstract

Scarborough five years ago became the first school district in Maine to hire an emergency medical technician to supplement its school nursing staff, and is expected to hire another one full-time tonight. School officials defend the practice, saying it saves money and allows the department's only nurse to devote more time to counseling, health prevention and education. Critics say that the school district should be hiring more school nurses instead of supporting nurses with EMTs or health aides. Details.
