Abstract

The Maine Board of Pesticides Control yesterday failed to consider a citizens petition proposing a ban on the herbicide Velpar, traces of which have been detected in wells in Hancock and Washington counties. The selective herbicide kills weeds but spares berries, and is credited with tripling crop yields on Maine's 58,000 acres of blueberry land since it was first introduced ten years ago.
