Abstract

An investor group led by Sappi Ltd. of South Africa on Monday announced an agreement to purchase S. D. Warren, which includes nearly 1 million acres of timberland in Maine and plants in Westbrook, Skowhegan, Michigan, Alabama and Pennsylvania. Sappi praises the Skowhegan plant as the lowest-cost producer of coated paper in the country, and said the paper research facility in Westbrook is one of the most advanced in the world. The company is saying little about the Westbrook mill, probably because it isn't likely to invest a lot of money in the facility. Details.
