Abstract

An official with Consumers Water Company says this past winter's unusually cold weather was particularly hard on water mains, causing 39 breaks, as compared to 16 breaks last year. There were 317 line freeze-ups, up from 90, and even transmission mains and service lines five feet below the surface were not safe from the frost. Temperatures in January averaged 14 degrees, almost seven degrees below normal, while February's average of 19.6 degrees was also below normal. Details.
