Abstract

A monument of a Yankee Civil War soldier stands in the Williamsburg County Courthouse square in Kingstree, S.C., and have some wondering if it was originally meant for the town of York. The Charlotte (N.C.) Observer last weekend ran a story about efforts in York to unravel the mystery of why a statue of a Confederate soldier stands in the York square, and led to the discovery of the Kingstree Yankee. Tom Johnson of the Old York Historical Society doubts that there will be an exchange of statues.
