Abstract

A meeting of the Northern Forest Lands Council yesterday in Bethel was the first of 19 sessions the council will hold to gauge reactions to its recent proposals for preserving traditional uses of the forests. Environmentalists, loggers and landowners attending the meeting praised the council for its 33 proposals aimed at bolstering forest-based local economies, protecting forest ecology and maintaining recreational access. Tension was evident between environmentalists and property-rights groups, who have taken opposite sides on key issues. Details.
