Abstract

Mark Hedden, an archaeologist with the Maine Historic Preservation Commission, says the individuals who use colored chalk on 1,500-year-old petroglyphs in Embden damaged a precious archaeological resource. The Indian rock carvings depict people, moose, deer and a serpent, and appear on a large outcropping of ledge. The chalk not only masks the organic material in the stone, but also gives an imperfect depiction of the art work itself.
