Abstract

The Maine Secretary of State's Office last week approved the petition seeking a property tax cap, despite the opinion of the state Attorney General's Office that the measure is unconstitutional. The Maine Taxpayers Action Network has begun collecting signatures, and president Carol Palesky of Topsham predicts that enough signatures will be collected on Election Day to force a statewide referendum vote. Sensible Tax Limits, the intitiative's new name, would limit property taxes to one percent of a home's value. Details.
