Abstract

A survey by the Maine State Housing Authority shows that the typical person using a homeless shelter in Maine is a single male in his 20s who has no income and is a first-time shelter user. The MSHA based their findings on responses from 981 people who used the 34 shelters that receive money from its Shleter Operating Subsidy grant. Other findings indicate that 64 percent of those using shelters were male, and the average age of all respondents was 25.
