Abstract

Seventy miles offshore, a large underwater peak provides shelter for large, predatory fish whose numbers are depleted in other areas of the Gulf of Maine. Researcher Robert S. Steneck of the University of Maine has studied the area, and says that the size and variety of species like cod and wolf fish around the peak are typical of what the area produced several hundred years ago, before overfishing depleted the stock of fish and prevented fish from attaining their fully mature size.
