Abstract

A Republican plan to balance the state budget without $250 million in higher taxes was defeated 95-49 in the Maine House and 19-13 in the Senate, sending it back to the Appropriations Committee for further work. Gov. McKernan has indicated he will veto a bill which would extend the temporary tax package to raise the $250 million needed to balance the books. Details.
