Abstract

Intense lobbying is under way on behalf of the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, the Charleston (S.C.) Naval Shipyard and the Mare Island Naval Shipyard in California, all of which could be recommended for closure early next year. Four Maine towns--Kittery, Eliot, York and South Berwick--could lose 1,440 jobs and nearly 10 percent of their business if the Portsmouth yrd closes.
