Abstract

Bath Iron Works failed to win a contract to design and complete the conversion of three commercial ships into cargo ships suitable for military use. The Sealift contracts were awarded to National Steel and Shipbuilding Co. of San Diego, Calif., and to Newport News Shipbuilding in Virginia. Bath officials are hoping for better luck on its bid to build 15 new Sealift ships. The contracts will be awarded in mid-September.
