Abstract

Central Maine Power Co. (CMP) is now seeking an additional $6.7 million rate increase, bringing its total request for higher rates to $88.7 million. The request follows CMP's loss of the business of the Madison Electric Works, which accounts for 3 percent of CMP's sales. Some observers see CMP's loss of the Madison utility's business as the beginning of a death spiral, as larger users abandon the company in search of cheaper sources of electrical power.
