Abstract

The Maine Public Utilities Commission has approved a Bangor Hydro-Electric Co. pilot program in which utility customers will pay up to $300,000 to convert 20 homes to use heat pumps, which use the earth's heat energy instead of expensive electric heat. Most heat pumps in use in the United States pull small amounts of heat from the outside air, but the systems being installed in the Bangor area extract heat from groundwater, using electricity only to pump water and operate a blower and compressor.
