Abstract

Guilford Transportation Industries Inc. last week proposed taking over part of the Canadian Atlantic Railway in Maine and New Brunswick, which the Canadian Pacific wants to abandon. Guilford's slashing of jobs, track and service during the 1980s has made the company profitable in markets where other operations cannot survive, and the company believes its lower costs can make the line turn a profit.
