Abstract

Maine paid $210 million in Medicaid funds last year to keep patients in nursing homes and only $33 million to service them with live-in care, a disparity that is at the heart of a a policy debate on how the state should care for its elderly. The huge sums Maine spends on nursing home care has spawned a large and aggresssive nursing-home industry while offering few alternatives for those who want to live at home. Related story.
