Abstract

Maine had around 1,200 dairy farms in 1980, but ten years later that number had declined to fewer than 600. The farms that survive raise more animals and each animal produces more milk, while the milk that is produced is worth less per pound. Charleston, with a population of just over 1,000, has more cows than humans. Donnie Perkins and Jeff Weymouth are two dairy farmers trying to make it in Charleston. Details.
