Abstract

Maine's snow plowing and removal crews have a tough time keeping the roads free of snow. The state uses around 70,000 tons of salt annually, at a cost of $2.2 million. Although salt has come under fire for its detrimental effects on the environment, its chief advantage is it is relatively cheap, costing one-tenth the price of an alternative, calcium magnesium nitrate.
