Abstract

The 42,766-acre Nahmakanta Management Unit represents the largest single purchase by the Land for Maine's Future Board, which has spent nearly $35 million to buy public land. The Bureau of Public Land has worked for four years on a management plan for Nahmakanta, and access to Nahmakanta Lake has emerged as a major theme. Millinocket's Fin & Feather Club and the Sportsman's Alliance of Maine have spearheaded the access debate. Some observers are concerned that increased access will degrade the area, while others think the state should be thinking about how to provide more, rather than less access. Details.
