Abstract
The Family Planning Association of Maine next year will open an abortion clinic and training facility in an old CarTest center off Route 27 in Augusta. George Hill, executive director of the agency, said he expects ten abortions per week to be performed at the facility within a year, but the eventual goal is for the center to cease doing abortions while clinic-trained doctors meet the demand. There are an estimated 23-25 doctors in Maine who do abortions, down 20 percent from two years ago. There are clinics in Portland, South Portland and Bangor. A 1990 survey indicated 61 percent of Mainers favor a woman's right to an abortion. Details.
