Abstract

Shaw's is opening a 53,000-square-foot supermarket on Main Street in Bangor, the company's largest store in Maine. Bangor recently purchased a 28.5-acre parcel along the Penobscot River for just over $1 million, and Cadillac Mountain Sports plans to open a 15,000-square-foot outlet in the old W.T. Grant building. The former Freese's Department Store will host a senior housing complex and possibly an art school, and the former Sears building is being renovated for shops and offices. The projects have excited downtown supporters, who have long decried the movement of merchants from downtown to the Bangor Mall area.
