Abstract
"News & Issues" piece on the frustration of a state pay commission over legislators' refusal to vote themselves pay raises they privately say they need. A private poll answered by three-quarters of Maine legislators last year found that $29,179 is the average two-year salary they say they deserve. But they only gave themselves $18,640, a 3 percent increase and far less than the $27,000 recommended by the State Compensation Commission. Ralph Leonard, chairman of the five-member commission, said the only solution is to de-politicize legislative pay by setting up an independent commission..
