Abstract

A proliferation of bottle redemption centers in Maine has resulted in some consumers receiving 6 cents on each returnable instead of the five cents paid as deposit. Center operators offering the extra penny say it attracts returnables, but bottlers and distributors contend that the extra cent is proof the centers don't need the entire three-cent handling fee imposed by the Legislature. There were 540 million redeemable containers sold in Maine in fiscal year 1993, but only 515 million were returned for the deposit.
