Abstract

The National Marine Fisheries Service, as part of a plan to reduce the harbor porpoise bycatch during gillfishing, has ordered gillnetters to remove their gear from the Gulf of Maine and take the nets off their boats for a specified number of days each month. The first gear-out was scheduled for April 27-30, but was cancelled on April 26, increasing the exasperation that some gillnetters feel toward the NMFS and the new rules. The next gear-out is scheduled for May 26-29. Details.
