Abstract

Jason Draut, a graduating senior at Morse High School in Bath, told a commencement audience that Christian values need to prevail if the United States is to reverse trends toward teenage pregnancy and rising crime. Draut was followed by school principal Francis Lyons, who expressed pleasure at efforts by students to bring God back into the school system. An attorney affiliated with the Maine Civil Liberties Union said Lyons' statement could be perceived as an endorsement of religion by a school system, and thereby a violation of the Constitution.
