Abstract
Jim Wilson, a fisheries economist, and anthropologist Jim Acheson, both at the University of Maine at Orono, have formulated a new approach to saving the fisheries. The two say that fisheries management should concentrate on protecting the stable elements of the fisheries, instead of the wildly fluctuating elements such as stock size and fishing mortality rates. The stable elements, or biological constants, are key to fish growth and development, and include the time and place a species spawns, its migration routes, growths patterns and other factors.
