Abstract

National Semiconductor, the largest taxpayer in the city of South Portland, has asked city officals to create a Tax Increment Finance District to help offset the cost of the company's $70 million renovation and expansion -- The proposal, which must be approved by both the city council and the state, would give the company an estimated $172 million in tax breaks over the next 20 years -- Company officials say the plan will allow the company to remain competitive in a global economy -- Details
