National Semiconductor Corp., with 23,000 employees worldwide and sales of $2.29 billion in its most recent fiscal year, recently completed a $77 million expansion at its South Portland facility, one of three the company has designated as a center of excellence. National in South Portland is making new electronic circuits based on a revolutionary technology called BiCMOS, with the computer chips targeted for such products as laptop computers and big telephone switches.
