Abstract

Maine currently has around 100 independent power plants using wood, trash or water to produce energy -- The non-utility generators combine to produce 40 percent of the state's power needs, more than any other state in the union The Legislature this legislative session will consider a proposed tax on the earnings of the independent power producers -- Details, focus on the Greenville Steam Co, a subsidiary of the Swift River Hofslund Co that uses wood waste and chips to fuel its 155-megawatt plant
