Federal officials have backed away from a plan that would have banned fishing in Georges Bank for 20 days in May, which Maine fishermen had viewed as particularly devastating -- The ban was part of the New England Fisheries Management Council plan to replenish depleted groundfish stocks by reducing the catch by 50 percent during the next five years
